What you should know

Effects of the insurance cover:

  • For accidents and diseases at work
Being an employee, an apprentice or a trainee, you are insured against accidents and diseases at work occurring during your activity in the company.

  • For nonprofessional accidents
If you work for one employer at least eight hours a week, you are also insured against nonprofessional accidents.

Part-time workers not reaching the minimal amount of eight hours or work a week for any of their employers are only insured against accidents or diseases at work or occurring on the way to and back from work. There is no insurance cover of nonprofessional accidents.

Duration of insurance cover:

  • For a person insured against any kind of accident,

The insurance cover starts the day this person starts to work or is supposed to do so.  If the insured person has to make his way to work the day before already, the insurance cover starts the moment this person stars his trip to work.

The insurance cover expires by the end of the 30th day following the expiry of the last payment of the wages (or at least 50% of it), of any  financial compensation in case of disease.

  • For a person insured against accidents and diseases at work only,

The insurance cover starts the moment this person takes his way to work. The insurance cover expires as soon as this person has made his way home back from work.

Reduction of insurance services:
  • In case of accident or disease at work, the insurance services can, under certain conditions, be reduced or even refused.

An insured person injuring himself deliberately is not entitled to any insurance service. If the accident was caused by the insured person while committing a crime or an offence, cash compensations can be reduced or even be refused in particularly serious cases.

Moreover, the following restrictions are applicable to accidents occurring away from work:
  • If the accident was caused by the insured person’s carelessness, the cash compensation are reduced by law.

  • If the insured person is the victim of an accident caused by facing a major danger or by acting dangerously, he will have to expect, according to the circumstances, to see his compensations refused or a reduced by at least 50%.
