Since January 1st 1996, a basic insurance is obligatory. The basic insurance only covers the services given in the policy-holder’s canton of residence, except for imperative medical reasons, when the necessary care cannot be given in the canton of residence (complex operations such as transplants etc.) or if the policy-holder receives emergency care outside his canton of residence. This is also valid during short-term stays abroad. Premiums for the basic insurance vary according to the age and residence of the policy-holder. There are 3 categories of premiums:
Policy-holders must pay a part
of the costs for care services refunded by the basic insurance, except for
all pregnancy-related care. This part is called insurance deductible. |
